Explore Nature – Hiking Trails in Budapest

There are plenty of nice excursions in the capital. You don't even have to leave the border of Budapest for them. An excellent program for a pleasant weekend is a spontaneous trip. You don’t have to travel far, every part of Budapest is full of enchantingly beautiful wonders. Sometimes it’s just nice to move out of the abundance of gray concrete into nature, and you can do that in several places in the capital. Popular and lesser-known hiking trails are almost tempting to explore, especially in the fall.

Normafa

How to get there: From Széll Kálmán tér you can get here by buses 21-21A, from Hűvösvölgy by the Children’s Railway, and from Városmajor by the Cogwheel.

Located in the Buda hills, Normafa is a popular destination for hikers in the capital. According to legend, in the year of the birth of King Matthias, the old beech tree that stood here for centuries sprouted. Miklós Radnóti also skied here with his love and was a popular excursion destination for the actors of the Hungarian National Theater. At the foot of the beech tree, she sang an excerpt from Rozália Schodelné Klein’s opera singer Bellini’s Norma, after which the venue was named Normafa. The tree was struck and destroyed by lightning in the late twenties. However, the area has remained a popular excursion destination, the people of Budapest come here when the first snow falls or when spring is already giving rise to a sweater.

Árpád Lookout Tower

How to get there: It can be reached from Óbuda, Kolosy tér by bus 65 or 65A, you have to get off at the Fenyőgyöngye restaurant.

The 376-meter-high Látó Hill (Swabian name Gugger Hill) still belongs to Budapest, but entering its colorful forest we can feel close to nature. After getting off of the bus, we cross the highway and head for the blow marked with the National Blue Tour at the information boards at the edge of the forest. It’s impossible to get lost on the perfectly signposted, winding, pine-lined route, and since it only rises slightly, the walk isn’t even strenuous. Within twenty minutes we reached the Árpád Lookout Tower, built in 1929 from the folk, Szekler-style natural stone and wood, which was renovated in 2001. We also found two fireplaces, and the view is beautiful, even though some of the high-lying foliage already obscures some of it: the bridges, Gellért Hill, Rózsadomb are visible.

Sashegy

How to get there: By public transport take bus 8E to Korompai Street, from there up Korompai Street, then left on Tájék Street.

One of the most characteristic mountains of Udapest is the steep, barren Sas Hill (266 m) crowned with limestone cliffs, with a strictly protected top with a visitor center and a dazzling educational trail. In addition to the unique panorama from the observation terrace, we can get acquainted with one of the most interesting habitats in our capital on the study trail with expert guidance, and with a little luck we can also see a Pannonian lizard. The study trail is comfortable to walk along, albeit on a very steep hillside in some places, but it winds through a level, offering a fantastic panorama of the city among the dazzling white dolomite rocks.

SUP Budapest

How to get there: Kossuth Lajos üdülőpart 81. – By public transport take bus 34 from Göncz Árpád Városközpont to Sinkovits Imre utca from there turn right to Kossuth Lajos üdülőpart.

If you are more of a water person, the Hungarian SUP culture is a loose, good-headed community, and we have a great opportunity to slow down in connection with sports, while our posture and sense of balance also improve, and rowing on the water introduces nature from a completely new aspect. If you are looking for an SUP tour in Budapest, would like to descend from the Roman coast to the Elizabeth Bridge and shoot a selfie with the Parliament, or bypass the island of Lupa in a few hours, SUP Budapest offers great tours. Only swimming skills are required to participate, everything else is provided by the enthusiastic team.
